CQC registration
CQC registration
How much time should a new provider allow for CQC registration?
It helps to separate the process into two stages. The first is preparation, where the service model, application information and supporting evidence are brought together. We normally aim to complete the agreed consultancy preparation within around 7–10 working days once the required information is available. The second is CQC's own assessment, which has no guaranteed completion date and can take several months depending on the application and assessment required.
What are the next stages after a CQC application is submitted?
After submission, CQC carries out its own checks and assessment. The next steps can include requests for clarification or further evidence, discussion with the Nominated Individual, a Registered Manager interview or a site-related assessment. Providers should keep their registration evidence organised and be ready to explain how the proposed service will operate.
Do we need to do anything else while preparing for registration?
Yes. Some tasks remain the provider’s responsibility and sit outside the consultancy scope, such as arranging insurance quotations, opening a business bank account, ordering supplies and putting appropriate health and safety arrangements in place. We can help you identify the practical items that normally need to be organised alongside the registration work.
Do I need CQC registration if I am a practising GP?
If a GP is providing regulated activities privately, CQC registration may be required unless the work is being carried out within an appropriately registered provider or practice. The correct position depends on the service model and regulated activities, so we recommend checking the scope before starting the service.

How should we prepare for our CQC interview?
Preparation should cover the regulations, CQC requirements, your policies, your application documents and the way your service will operate in practice. We can provide interview-preparation support using example question areas and scenario-based practice. Example questions are guidance only and should not be treated as a guarantee of the exact questions CQC will ask.
What evidence should an inspection-readiness review test?
A useful readiness review checks whether leadership, records, staff knowledge and operational practice support each other. Depending on the service, the evidence may include governance, safeguarding, medicines, workforce controls, complaints, incidents, service-user experience, infection prevention, health and safety and quality assurance.

What are your payment terms?
Project payment terms are confirmed in the quotation or proposal for the work. Content-based services are generally paid for before drafting and delivery begins unless different terms are agreed in writing.
What happens if we do not get CQC approval?
CQC makes the registration decision, so no consultancy can guarantee approval. If an error in work supplied by us needs correcting, we will address that issue. If CQC requires a resubmission or substantial additional work, that work is scoped and quoted separately.
What level of support do we get from you?
The level and duration of support depend on the package you purchase. Registration support normally covers the agreed application work and the support period described in your proposal. Additional work outside the agreed scope can be quoted separately.
Do we get copies of our application documents?
Yes. Documents prepared for you are supplied in usable formats so you can retain them for your records and update them in future where appropriate.
Why do you have different prices for different services?
Different provider types and regulated activities require different levels of research, drafting, evidence and operational detail. This means the amount of work varies between social care, primary care, secondary care and specialist services. Current fees are shown on our Prices page or confirmed in a written quotation.
Can you support providers throughout England?
Yes. CQC Consultant supports health and social care providers across England. Face-to-face appointments are available from our Tolworth office, with telephone and video consultations available for providers elsewhere.
Popular CQC questions
Clear answers to common CQC searches
Short, practical answers to questions providers commonly ask about registration, inspections, governance and sector-specific compliance.
What does a CQC consultant do?
A CQC consultant helps health and social care providers understand regulatory requirements and prepare practical evidence for registration, governance, compliance and inspection readiness. Support may include applications, mock inspections, policies, audits, Registered Manager preparation and improvement planning.
How can a CQC consultant help with registration?
CQC registration support can include reviewing the service model and regulated activities, preparing application information, supporting the Statement of Purpose, checking supporting evidence and helping Registered Managers prepare for their responsibilities.
What is CQC Regulation 17?
Regulation 17 is the Good Governance regulation. It requires registered providers to operate effective systems and processes to assess, monitor and improve quality and safety, manage risks, maintain appropriate records and act on feedback.
What does Good Governance mean under Regulation 17?
Good Governance means having effective oversight of the service and being able to demonstrate how quality, safety, risks, records, feedback and improvement actions are monitored and managed over time.
What is included in a CQC mock inspection?
A CQC mock inspection can review governance, policies, records, safeguarding, medicines, workforce arrangements, training, complaints, incidents, service-user experience, infection control and quality assurance. The scope should be tailored to the provider type and regulated activities.
How do I prepare for a CQC inspection?
Inspection preparation should focus on how the service works in practice. Providers should organise evidence, review governance and audit findings, check records and workforce systems, understand current risks and be ready to explain how improvements are identified and followed through.
What help is available with a CQC registration application?
CQC application help can cover regulated-activity review, provider structure, Statement of Purpose preparation, supporting documents, evidence checks and Registered Manager readiness. The exact work depends on the service being registered.
What support is available for Registered Manager interviews?
Registered Manager interview preparation can include reviewing role responsibilities, leadership evidence, governance arrangements, policies and scenario-based discussion. Preparation should improve confidence without assuming that any particular questions will be asked.
What CQC policies and procedures do providers need?
The required policy framework depends on the service, regulated activities, workforce and risks. Policies should reflect how the provider actually operates and should connect with governance, audit, training, incident management and quality assurance systems.
What happens if CQC identifies compliance concerns?
Providers should understand the concern, identify immediate risks, organise supporting evidence and create a clear action plan with responsibilities and completion dates. Follow-up checks should show whether the improvement has been completed and sustained.
How do I register a supported living service with CQC?
The first step is to understand the supported living service model and which regulated activities are being carried on. Registration work can then cover the provider structure, Statement of Purpose, Registered Manager arrangements, policies, governance and supporting evidence.
How do I register a domiciliary care service with CQC?
Domiciliary care registration requires a clear operating model, appropriate regulated activities, leadership arrangements and evidence showing how care will be delivered safely in people’s homes. Application preparation should align documents and governance with the proposed service.
What are the CQC requirements for GP practices?
CQC requirements for GP practices include effective governance, safe care, appropriate records, safeguarding, medicines management, results and referral systems, workforce oversight, incident learning and evidence of quality improvement.
What does CQC look for in dental compliance?
Dental CQC compliance commonly involves governance, infection prevention and control, safeguarding, clinical records, equipment and maintenance systems, workforce arrangements, medicines where relevant and evidence that risks and quality are monitored.
Does CQC regulate aesthetic clinics?
Some aesthetic services fall within CQC regulation when they involve regulated activities. Whether registration is required depends on what the clinic actually provides, who provides it and the circumstances of the treatment, so the service scope should be reviewed carefully.

What support might a new social care provider need before registration?
A new social care provider may need registration support alongside suitable policies and a business plan, but the starting point should always be what is already in place. Existing documents can be reviewed before any additional work is recommended, so the support reflects the provider's actual needs rather than a fixed package.
What registration support is usually relevant to a new private healthcare provider?
Private healthcare registration commonly involves the application itself, a clear Statement of Purpose, leadership arrangements and service-specific policies. Where suitable policies already exist, they can be reviewed first rather than replaced automatically. The exact support should follow the regulated activities and operating model of the provider.
